Drip irrigation is key in a joint effort to protect the aquatic resources of the Benazaire stream, a key tributary of the Guadiana River, Nestlé has announced an ambitious tree planting plan. Near its Aquarel facility in Herrera del Duque, Badajoz, the company plans to plant 400 trees in the coming months.

What is

This initiative is carried out in collaboration with multiple entities: the Government of Extremadura, the Provincial Council of Badajoz, the Guadiana Hydrographic Confederation and the La Siberia Biosphere Reserve. The main objective of the project is to strengthen the region's water resources and promote biodiversity through irrigation systems. Expected benefits include reducing water evaporation in the river, increasing CO2 absorption, and improving the habitat of Jarabugo, an endangered native fish.

Diversity is a prominent feature of this project, with the planting of a variety of species such as gall oaks, ash trees, poplars, hackberries and mustaches. This effort is added to the recent planting of more than 1.100 trees in the same area.

Compromise: use drip irrigation

Nestlé is committed to the sustainability of the project, using recycled water from its Herrera del Duque plant for the drip irrigation of the trees. According to Iván Álvarez, director of Nestlé Aquarel, the company seeks to "promote the regeneration of the water cycle and generate a positive environmental impact" through collaboration with local partners.

Rosa María Araújo Cabello, president of Ceder La Siberia, highlights the relevance of this project for the region, aligning itself with the environmental objectives of both the La Siberia Biosphere Reserve and the community in general.
