Functions and installation of pressure boilers in agricultural irrigation systems

Functions and installation of pressure vessels

Pressure boilers are water tanks that are installed in pressure pumping systems such as irrigation, nebulization or micro-sprinkler systems, among others. The boiler has the function of supplying water to the installation at a determined and stable pressure.

Types of pressure pots

Membrane reboilers

Membrane tanks consist of a tank that contains a completely waterproof membrane made up of a single piece. This membrane is at a certain pressure (it must be 0.5 bars less than the irrigation pressure) and is in charge of absorbing the high and low pressures that can reach the system, displacing the water from its interior towards the installation at a constant pressure.

The membrane can be EPDM or butyl. In any case, it keeps the air isolated from the water, so there is no possibility of corrosion of the interior metallic surface of the tank or of dilution of the air in the water.

The butyl membrane allows work with hot and cold water. There is no contact between water and steel due to the internal layer of epoxy.

Galvanized boilers

Galvanized boilers are tanks made of steel, according to directive 2014/68/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council, for pressure equipment from two deep-drawn bottoms and a curved sheet metal ferrule, joined together by welding seams, according to procedures and approved personnel. The maximum service temperature is 60⁰C.

Galvanized boilers have a similar operation to membrane boilers. However, they lack this, since the interior of the tank is hollow. The air chamber is generated by means of injectors or compressors (the boiler contains welded intakes to facilitate the task).

It is important to consider that the concentration of air decreases as the boiler works, since the air dissolves in the water and goes outside when this pressure group is running.

The air injectors have the function of guaranteeing an abundant and continuous supply of air to the tank through the use of external centrifugal pumps. The injector must be installed vertically, as well as two ball valves: one between the tank and the upper end of the injector, and another between the lower end of the injector and the pump suction adapter. It is advisable to adjust the second valve in case of high pressure levels, to avoid noises and vibrations produced by the injector float when it drops rapidly.

IMPORTANT: If the pump is connected to a water supply, the reservoir pressure must be at least 1.7 times the nominal pressure.

To check the water level inside the galvanized boiler, it is advisable to install a transparent tube (made of plastic materials, completely transparent and with a galvanized sheet protector) between two level taps (made of brass).

Its application is common in water intakes, fire-fighting installations or in installations for drinking water.

OPERATION OF PRESSURE BOILERS

The water arrives from the pump to the boiler and is stored inside, completely isolated from the air in the membrane (in the case of galvanized boilers they do not have an air-water separation system inside). The pressure increases inside the boiler until a maximum value determined and configured in the pressure switch is reached. At that moment, the pressure switch stops the electrical supply to prevent the pump from displacing more water into the boiler.

The pressure inside the boiler makes the air in the membrane have enough energy to push the water towards the system that requires it. In galvanized boilers, the difference is that the air is in the chamber instead of in the membrane.

The air pressure is reduced as water is pushed outside while the boiler is emptying. When the internal pressure reaches a minimum value, the pressure switch activates the start of the pump and the boiler is filled again until the maximum pressure value is reached.

ADVANTAGES OF THE INSTALLATION OF PRESSURE BOILERS

  • Pressurized water reservoir for the system.
  • They prolong the useful life of pumping equipment by reducing the number of starts-stops of the pump.
  • Energy saving.
  • Its installation is convenient when the drainage system is above the pressure system.
  • Possibility of varying the volume stored in the boiler according to the needs of the installation.
