What is drip irrigation?

Drip irrigation is one of the most widely used systems in Spanish agriculture so far. This system is generally used in arid or semi-arid zones, which are characterized by having an average rainfall between 200 mm and 1000 mm, annually. The grounds are usually dry, or very dry due to the absence of water, and therefore can become infertile. Therefore, in all those regions where water is a scarce commodity, this type of irrigation can lead to a significant increase in production.

Drip irrigation, also known as 'drip irrigation', allows optimal use of water. The water applied by this irrigation method will go directly to the soil, where the roots of the plants are, through the installation of a system of pipes. In this way the water will be applied homogeneously and with certain constancy.

Most of the irrigation systems use a mechanism formed by a water filter that prevents obstruction in the drippers, which are the emitters of the water for drip irrigation.

Advantages

This irrigation system has several advantages over other systems.

  • Higher performance.
  • Maintaining a constant humidity.
  • Saving water and, therefore, greater profitability.
  • Water optimization: The water goes directly where the plant needs it most.
  • It facilitates the application of fertilizers, since they can be applied directly by the irrigation system.
  • More effective and requires much less work than other systems.

 

Types of drippers


Before installing a drip irrigation system, we must consider what type of dripper best suits our needs. In this way we will optimize resources and
we will obtain better results.
The drippers can be inserted by clicking on the pipe, or the dripper can already be integrated into the pipe itself. There are two types of drippers: self-compensating and turbulent.

Self-compensating dripper: It has a membrane that regulates the flow rate, regardless of the water pressure.
