The word bonsai comes from Japanese and literally means "tree that grows in a tray". According to the Royal Spanish Academy, a bonsai is "an ornamental plant subjected to a cultivation technique that prevents its growth by cutting its roots and pruning its branches."

Taking proper care of a bonsai is within everyone's reach, especially if you are passionate about nature. To do it correctly, we recommend that you first learn about the basic care they require. In this post we will explain clearly and simply one of the most important aspects: irrigation.

Undoubtedly, irrigation is one of the most important aspects of any type of plant and in this case, it has a special role. Irrigation is the most relevant aspect for any flower or plant to grow correctly. Knowing the needs of the plant, the frequency of water it needs and the irrigation system is essential for it to develop in the best conditions without providing an unnecessary amount of water.

How should bonsai be watered?

In the case of bonsai, frequent watering is required. In the first place, we must have a little water directly on the ground, so that the humidity opens the pores of it. After a few minutes, we must repeat the irrigation until the water comes out through the drainage holes. It is essential that the bonsai pot has drainage holes so that the plant can expel the water it does not need. Otherwise, the roots could rot.

The ideal time to do so will be when the sand is slightly dry. This type of plant requires constant humidity.

En Mundoriego We supply the necessary accessories for a standard system suitable for the irrigation of bonsai through 12l / h drippers, requiring the following materials:

1) 16mm tubing in 25m roll

2) Dropper punch

3) PCJ 12l / h dripper

4) PE 5x3mm microtube

5) Pot diffuser 12l / h

When installing the 16mm pipe, we must perforate it with the punch, puncture the dripper and join it to the diffuser using the microtube. With this irrigation system through a self-compensating dripper we can regulate the flow rate, in this case 12l/h, so that the same amount of water reaches the diffuser, which will be nailed next to each one of the bonsai. We will need one or more drippers and diffusers for each bonsai, depending on its size. We will use the length of the microtube depending on the distance we have from the 16mm pipe to where we want to nail the diffuser. In this way we can irrigate all the diffusers with the same flow when we have a large number of bonsai.

What are the consequences of watering a bonsai incorrectly?

Lack of watering can cause the plant to dry out completely. Both excess or lack of water can seriously damage plants, leading to the appearance of health problems and the appearance of diseases.

We recommend knowing in advance the amount of water your bonsai needs depending on its age, its environment and the land where it is located.
