PVC pipes: Typology in agriculture and characteristics

All the PVC pipes They are widely used for conducting water in many areas of our environment. In this post we are going to focus on PVC pipes used in agriculture, the PVC-U system.

Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) has excellent characteristics in the temperature range from 0 to +60 ° C. PVC-U systems guarantee maximum thermal stability and chemical resistance, withstanding the most extreme conditions. In particular, those associated with the transport of media such as acids, bases and salts.

PVC pipes commonly used in agriculture:

  • PVC pressure pipe: They are those that are prepared, due to their wall thickness, to the conduction of water under load pressure. Within the pressure PVC pipes we can distinguish the conventional (dark gray), and the oriented PVC (blue), which achieve the same pressure with less wall thickness. Its use is mainly for sprinkler irrigation or drip irrigation, where it is necessary to withstand this pressure for its correct operation.
  • PVC evacuation pipeThese pipes, also called sanitary, are used mainly in conducting water without pressure, by evacuating water from pipes or rainwater. Its use in agriculture is less than in housing, where its use is more widespread in sanitary downspouts for buildings.

  • PVC sanitation pipe: They are those designed to evacuate large-scale sewage and rainwater. They are distinguished by their tile color. They work without pressure and their union is by means of an elastic joint. Its use is mainly intended for canalization of ditches, rivers, road crossings or rural roads.

  • Transparent PVC pipe: They are pipes that have the same characteristics as a pressure PVC pipe, except that the color is transparent, unlike the dark gray of conventional pressure PVC. Its use lies mainly in industry or decoration, although it is used in agriculture for an irrigation viewer to observe the color of the water after a dosage by means of fertilizer.
  • Flexible PVC pipe: These pipes have the ability to be used in sections where the rigidity of conventional PVC does not allow it, so due to its flexibility, it can overcome physical obstacles without the need for derivations. Its union is by external gluing. Its use extends mainly in evacuations, plumbing pipes, swimming pool purification circuits, hydromassage bathtubs, drains, condensation and air conditioning installations.
  • PVC pipe electrical conduit: They are pipes with a very thin wall, since they are not used for water like the previous ones, but for electrical supply systems, lighting or signaling. For this reason they are lighter, maintaining the same characteristics of PVC in electrical insulation and resistance to attacks under the surface that may cause breakage.
  • PVC aeration pipe: These pipes are also not very useful in the field of agriculture, since their main use falls on the industry. Its characteristics are flexibility, lightness and rigidity, which allows it to be resistant to atmospheric agents and various chemical products. They are formed by a rigid spiral inside and are used mainly for industrial ventilation of gases, abrasive substances, fumes, etc.
