The importance of irrigation in crops

The most important factor for plants to grow properly is water. Through the soil, plants absorb all the nutrients they need. In this post we want to highlight the importance of irrigation and explain, in general terms, the types of irrigation that exist and the particularities of each of them.

When the soil does not receive enough water naturally through rain, we must incorporate alternative systems. The irrigation system we choose will depend on the type of soil and, mainly, on the needs of each type of crop.

Choosing the right irrigation system is important for our type of crop to develop in optimal conditions. Our goal should be to provide the plant with the exact amount of water.

Regardless of the type of plantation (flowers, decorative plants, fruits, vegetables...) you will need to use the most appropriate irrigation system. This is vital to ensure that our plants grow in a healthy way.

Finding the necessary system can be difficult, if you do not know its characteristics in depth. That's why in Mundoriego We make it much easier for you and explain what each one of them consists of.

Types of irrigation

Drip irrigation: Drip irrigation is widely used, especially in arid or semi-arid areas, where rainfall ranges between 200 mm and 1000 mm per year. Therefore, the ground is usually quite dry due to weather conditions.

Drip irrigation, as its name suggests, drops water drop by drop. Therefore, it guarantees an efficient use of resources. The water penetrates little by little into the ground and manages to maintain a constant humidity on the roots of the plant.

One of its main advantages is saving water, which makes it a perfect irrigation system in places where water is scarce.

Sprinkler irrigation: Sprinkler irrigation is basically a form of surface irrigation. Its way of distributing the water simulates the way the water falls through the rain. At the same time, the sprinkler irrigation system allows multiple possibilities. Its installation can be at a fixed point or not (fixed, semi-fixed, automatic...). In this way we can move it, if necessary, to adapt it to the irrigation needs of the land.

Among its main advantages we can highlight that it will allow us to irrigate large areas of land in less time. It is usually used in gardening, or mainly cereal and vegetable crops.

Among its main disadvantages we must highlight that water consumption is much higher than drip irrigation, for example.

nebulizer irrigation: This irrigation system expels water on the crop in the form of a very fine mist. Its installation is done on the plantation. In this way it falls homogeneously and contributes to lowering the average temperature.

It is normally used in greenhouses. Among its main advantages, we can highlight that it does not damage the crop and helps to get the moisture that our crop needs.

Underground irrigation: Underground irrigation is a variety of drip irrigation, with the particularity that the pipe with the integrated dripper is installed below the surface, about 10-15cm below ground. The dripper has an anti-siphon capacity, where it manages not to introduce the earth into the dripper, and does not produce blockages.

Among its main advantages, it should be noted that, as it is buried, the animals do not bite the drippers when looking for water, and the machinery does not break the material when stepped on it. Among its disadvantages we can highlight the higher price of the dripper and the lack of visualization of the drip to know if it is being watered at all times.
