El irrigation It is one of the most important factors for any plant to grow properly. When choosing the most suitable system for natural grass, we can mainly highlight two types of irrigation: sprinkler irrigation y diffuser irrigation. Surely you have some doubts about what are their differences, similarities and which is the most suitable to solve your needs.

Therefore, in this post we are going to briefly tell you what each of them consists of, the similarities and differences between them, and how to choose the most appropriate in each case. Take note that we start!

Irrigation sprinkler: what it is and how it works

Un sprinkler It is an irrigation emitter that is commonly used in large areas of natural grass. However, it can also be used in other areas such as, for example, irrigation of crops in open fields or nurseries, among others.

El irrigation By spraying it works by means of a jet of water under pressure that spreads over the surface thanks to its rotating base.
The scope of this irrigation system is very varied, depending on the use that is going to be given. We can differentiate between four large groups of sprinklers:

Short throw sprinklers. Its approximate range is between 4-7 meters.

Mid-range sprinklers. Its approximate range is between 6-12 meters.

High reach sprinklers. Its approximate range is between 12-18 meters.

Irrigation cannons. Range greater than 25 meters. These are commonly used on soccer fields.

Each sprinkler It has a filter whose main function is to protect the nozzle. Its ease of disassembly facilitates cleaning when necessary. In addition, they can be used in fixed or removable installations.

The irrigation sprinklers They are made of very resistant materials, because they are usually used outdoors. Therefore, they have great resistance to high and low temperatures, or ultraviolet rays.

Irrigation sprinklers can be classified into two types:

Aerial sprinklers: Aerial sprinklers are usually fixed on a support.

Pop-up sprinklers: As the name suggests, pop-up sprinklers rise from the ground when they are to be used.

Irrigation diffuser: what it is and how it works

The irrigation diffusers they are emitters commonly used in gardening. This irrigation system is responsible for distributing the water in the form of drops or small jets. The difference with sprinklers is that they only distribute the water in one direction, as they do not have a system that allows them to rotate. However, the scope arc is adjustable, being able to cover 360 degrees. This arc can be varied by the diffuser nozzle.
As a general rule, the reach of the irrigation nozzles is usually between 1,5 and 6 meters apart.

Irrigation diffusers can be classified into two types:

Aerial diffusers: They are usually placed on a fixed support.

Pop-up diffusers: As in the case of sprinklers, the irrigation diffuser emerges when its operation is activated.

Advantages of sprinklers and irrigation diffusers

In general, sprinklers are more effective than diffusers. We tell you all the advantages of using one system or another.

Sprinkler advantages

✅The sprinkling has a lower cost in irrigation emittersor, in comparison with the irrigation diffusers, since each one of them can cover a wide surface. Choosing a short, medium or high reach sprinkler will depend on our needs.

✅Irrigation using sprinklers is quite cash by the size of the drops it emits. This means that they are not blown away by the wind.

✅The sprinkler irrigation system needs a lower investment in valves. This is basically due to the fact that this system is capable of reaching a larger surface area. Therefore, the number of valves required will be less.

Diffusers advantages

✅Diffusers need less water pressure.

✅The diffusers span a smaller space. Therefore, it can be the perfect irrigation system for those small or narrow places.

Lower cost of breakdowns and repairs, since these tend to have a lower price than sprinklers.

  1. Hello. I'm going to lay grass on a square of dirt. 6,90 x 9,80 meters. Then I have 7 planters of 15m2, 2m2, three of 5m2, and another two of 2 M2. The pressure is normal in a chalet. The gardener tells me to put three solenoid valves, one for dripping planters and two for lawns. And he tells me to put sprinklers better than diffusers. As my father who has his plot had told me the opposite because he says the water was lighter and better for the lawn, I already have the mess. For this size of lawn, better sprinklers or diffusers? Any brand in particular that do not give problems? 3 solenoid valves only? Thanks

    • Good,
As his father told him, the diffusers have a better rainfall but the problem is the frame and the flow they consume. To put diffusers you would need to put them on a frame of 4 to 5m at most and, depending on the diameter of the meter, it is normal that only 4 or 5 diffusers can be connected per sector (the flow rate of 4 units would be 1.600-2.000l/h), depending on the the dimensions would have to put three lines of 4 diffusers (3 sectors). On the other hand, sprinklers consume a lower flow rate per unit and have a greater range. If you choose to install sprinklers you should use a short throw model such as the 3504 sprinkler ( https://mundoriego.es/producto/aspersor-3504-r-h-12-sectorial-boquilla-20/ ) with the 1.0 nozzle that reaches 6.4m, selecting this sprinkler would need to install two lines of 3 units per line (1 sector), this sector would consume from 1440 to 1800l/h.

We hope we have helped you.
      Sincerely, the Mundoriego team.

  2. I want to install an irrigation system on a piece of land with 12 mx 28 m and another space of 4.30 mx 10 m that are adjoining. What do you recommend for one or the other? I also need to buy the pump for irrigation. Thanks
