It is called irrigation system to all that structure whose purpose is that the plantation grows in optimal conditions. Choosing one irrigation system or another will depend on the type of crop, the weather conditions or the type of terrain.

The main objective when choosing one system or another will be the Energy Efficiency to save water and therefore money.

The system drip irrigation it is one of the most used in the Spanish geography. It is normally used in areas where the climate is warm and the rains are infrequent. This irrigation allows the use of a commodity as scarce as water.

With respect to the rest of irrigation systems, part of the water is lost as a result of the high temperatures that cause its evaporation. This results in a waste of water.

However, drip irrigation allows maximum use of water because it is directly applied to the roots of the plant. This irrigation system has several advantages such as constant humidity, water optimization or reduced evaporation.

How to increase the use of water?

One option to improve water use is to use an underground drip irrigation system. This system consists of installing the pipes underground with a dripper suitable for the emission of water underground. The installation must be placed at a depth of between 10 and 50 centimeters approximately.

In this way the water will go directly to the roots of the plants. Insulating pipes from external factors will prevent water evaporation when temperatures are high.

Each one of the droppers must be placed at the distance required by each plant, in order to form a bulb of humidity just at the height of the roots.

This irrigation system can provide various benefits such as better use of water, avoiding loss of water through evaporation, uniformity in irrigation or avoiding having to remove the pipes to carry out tasks related to cultivation and maintenance of the plants.

Installation of underground drip irrigation

The installation of an underground drip irrigation system is not very different from the installation of surface irrigation, although it is necessary to take certain measures for maintenance and prolong the useful life of the distribution system. The objective remains the same: to provide water directly to the roots of the plant to create a humid zone around them.

However, to carry out the installation it is advisable to use a specific pipe with an anti-suction dripper. In this way we will avoid problems related to the clogging of the dripper in its groundwater emission.

You need to install a filtration system to avoid clogging the drippers in the pipes. In addition, in order to have an air intake, it is also advisable to install Air valves. These have the function of eliminating the air from inside the pipes and introducing it when the irrigation cycle is over, preventing the drippers from being obstructed by the suction of particles.

With respect to the rest of the elements that make up the irrigation installation, there is no difference whatsoever with respect to the surface drip irrigation system.

Advantages of underground drip irrigation systems

The underground drip irrigation system has some advantages over surface drip irrigation. Do you want to know what they are? Take note!

? Better use of water.

? The water will go directly to the roots of the plant.

? We avoid the evaporation of water when there are high temperatures.

? It adapts well to any type of terrain, even those that present unevenness, as they are self-compensating drippers.

? Less transmission of diseases between some plants and others.

? Avoid damage during plantation maintenance work.

? Prevent us from having rodent attacks.

? Reduces the proliferation of weeds.

  1. Hello,

I would like to consult you as experts in the field of underground drip irrigation systems. I am working on a small-scale project where I consider implementing a underground drip irrigation system, but it is difficult for me to understand which materials I would need (type and model of a water pump, water filter, pressure regulator, main pipeline, type and model of electric valves, as well as the drip tape with emitters.
The project is slightly challenging due to the fact that the terrain is terraced. Therefore, water needs to be supplied from one of the lower terraces to higher terraces.

    I am located in Portugal.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    • We advise you to contact us personally in order to help you with your questions and particular needs of your underground drip irrigation project.
So you can explain it to a technician personally.

  2. Hello, what type of suction cup is recommended to put at the end of the drip lines for an underground irrigation installation?
    gracias,
