Rainwater tanks. Features and installation for rainwater collection

Water scarcity is one of the most important challenges facing agriculture today. In this context, rainwater collection is an innovative and sustainable solution to supply the irrigation systems agricultural.

The use of rainwater does not have to be used only in agricultural irrigation systems, but can help the user to have a water reserve for those systems that do not require drinking water, such as garden irrigation, toilets, washing machines or fire-fighting installations.

Performing stormwater reclamation involves collecting rainwater from a surface. It is generally a roof, which is recommended to be kept clean to prevent rainwater from collecting too much dirt. The water would pass through a filter and then reach a tank to store it. The water would pass through a circuit separate from the drinking water circuit to get to where we need it.

Below, we detail some basic notions provided by our manufacturer of rainwater use systems, Rikutec, for the installation of this equipment:

First of all, we must decide the surface on which the rainwater will be collected. Once collected, it must be passed through a filter to prevent objects that could cause the water to rot, such as leaves, insects or organic matter, from entering the tank. Afterwards, the water will be stored in tanks (it is recommended that they be buried).

Rainwater collection tanks must be equipped with:

  • Device at the entrance that prevents turbulence.
  • Floating suction equipment for collecting water in the intermediate zone of the tank (this way the suspended matter in the water will not be able to precipitate to the bottom).
  • An evacuation siphon to avoid overloading the tank.

The integration of pumping groups is a good option to maximize the operational efficiency of the system.

To choose the rainwater tank that best suits your installation, we provide you with the information and some recommendations provided by our manufacturer Rikutec.

Before starting, we highlight that Rikutec tanks are manufactured by extrusion-blowing in high-density polyethylene. They consist of a single piece thanks to this technology and offer high stability and mechanical resistance. They do not treat the water, they only store it, so it cannot be consumed as if it were drinkable.

First of all, you must choose the size of the deposit. Whether the installation is going to be aerial or buried, we must take into account the space we have and the dimensions of the tank. For example, if a buried installation is to be carried out and the water table is very close to the surface or the ground is difficult to drill, it may be advisable to choose a tank from the AT 70 range, since they have a reduced height to reduce the depth of the excavation.

If height is not a problem, a good option is to install a tank from the AT 112 or AT 122 range, which can be raised along with a rainwater kit that consists of: Select or Sinus filter, suction float pump, evacuation siphon and a slowing inlet diffuser.
