It is not necessary to change it, since it is a synthetic material.
It is recommended that when the sludge is extracted, remove the bag that is under the lid and rinse it with water.
If the mesh covering the balls has broken, then you should buy a new replacement. But in principle, unless the mesh is broken, it should not be changed.
