The butterfly valve is a quarter-turn type valve, which allows the fluid to circulate through a circular disk, usually called a lentil, turning 90º to obtain the open and close position.
Butterfly valves, due to their low construction cost, their compact size and the wide possibilities of combining body, disc and seat materials, are widely used today, gaining the market over other types of valves such as gate valves.
The butterfly valve is the most used in large diameters, where due to its compact and economical construction it displaces the ball and the gate.
They are recommended:
• For fully open service
• For frequent actuation
• For watertight closure
• For conveying solids (powders, chaff, etc.)
• When only minimal trapped fluid is allowed in the pipe
• For low pressure drop across the valve
Applications:
• General service, liquids, gases, pastes, liquids with suspended solids, solids, food fluids, firefighting installations.
