Assembly and operation of a spreader (Basic installation)

A fertilizer spreader serves to provide nutrients through irrigation to enrich it. Its operation is quite simple: in principle it acts as a deposit for the fertilizer solution in which the product that we want to provide is diluted or dissolved through water. It has different outlets: one outlet, one inlet and another through which the internal pressure is relieved. In this article we are going to teach you how to assemble and operate a fertilizer spreader.

Materials needed to assemble a spreader

To assemble a fertilizer spreader and make it work, you will need a series of materials. In principle, all you will need are 2 reinforced polyethylene collars, a flexible PVC pipe, 2 male threaded polyethylene terminals, 1 female threaded polyethylene terminal, 2 extension polyethylene nuts and a manual mesh filter.

You will also need 2 polyethylene ball valves, two female threaded bag valves, a 60-liter 5-atm polyester fertilizer spreader, a PVC pressure pipe and a roll of Teflon.

How to assemble a spreader

1 The first thing we are going to do is mount two single socket collars. These are made up of two main parts: the base and the outlet, which can have different diameters.

2 We place the base at the bottom of the pipe. We put the sealing gasket on the inside of the outlet, ensuring that it does not come out of its seat, that it is well placed.

3 We now place the upper part of the collar on the pipe and proceed to screw to fix the piece.

4 Once this is done, with a drill and a metal or crown bit we drill the part that can be seen from the top of the collar. These collars can be installed on both PVC and polyethylene pipes.

5 We apply Teflon to all the inlets of the spreader: inlet, outlet and pressure relief.

6 Now we take our threads: in the case of having a thread-thread or polyethylene-polyethylene, we unscrew and screw. We screw the three bag valves into the intakes of our spreader: input, output and relief.

7 At the outlet we place the filter to ensure that no residue can clog the system.

8 Finally, we connect the inlet and outlet intakes with flexible pipes.

How our new spreader works

We throttle the water flow a little so that part of it is diverted to the spreader through the inlet. In the tank, the water will mix with the product and will come out of the outlet when we have opened it. The water, now enriched with the fertilizer, will return to the water flow passing through the outlet filter.

When we no longer have any fertilizer or fertilizer product left to add, we close the inlet and outlet valves and fully open the irrigation network valve. We also open the pressure relief valve so that it comes out.

As you can see, both the assembly and the operation of a fertilizer spreader is simple, but if you have any doubts, contact us. We will be happy to assist you.

  1. My question about the fertilizer spreader is, at the time of pouring the product into the spreading machine, should the product be added pure or already dissolved in water? Would it be valid for powder fertilizer?

    • For the fertilizer dosage, it depends on the product.
You should discuss it with the company that sells you the compost and see its specifications and how it is dosed with the water.

  2. I have the following doubts about the operation of a 40-liter spreader:
1º How to calculate it the amount of fertilizer to contribute by irrigation
2º How do I know that all the fertilizer provided has been consumed?
3º If water enters the tank continuously from the network, it will end up watering only with water from the moment when the fertilizer dissolves practically nil

    + + + + + + + + +
the amount of fertilizer to add for each irrigation

    • When using fertilizers, the fertilizer contribution cannot be calculated. This will be the amount of fertilizer that you put into the tank in the proportion indicated by the fertilizer you have purchased. It is not possible to know, except with practice, when the dilution of the supplied product ends, and when all the product is diluted, if it is watered directly with the water passing through the fertilizer machine.

    • Good,
It depends on the volume of the product, for the 60l spreader it is advisable not to fill more than 50l of volume, the 90l not to fill more than 75l.

      Sincerely,
      The Mundoriego team.

  3. Hi, I want to set up a drip spreader in an olive grove with 270 olive trees. The farm is on a slope. Everything can be worked with a normal wheeled tractor, which I need so that the fertilizer is distributed equally. Thank you.

  4. What pressure difference between the inlet and outlet?
there must be for the fertilizer spreader to work correctly

    • Good,
A fertilizer spreader does not require a minimum pressure for it to work since its function is to dilute the product to be added.
The mixture is stored in the tank and when it is loaded and the valve is opened, it is propelled towards the irrigation network.
Depending on the type of emitter you use, it will be necessary to consider the minimum pressure required for the dosage to come out through the dripper, sprinkler or other available emitter.

      Sincerely, the Mundoriego team.

  5. Hey.
How do you know that there is no more fertilizer inside the fertilizer spreader? Is it advisable to let it run for an estimated period of time?
I have a fertilizer spreader and I see that water is coming out from the top even though the lid is closed tightly. I understand that it may be a problem with the rubber or lid gasket. Is it easy to get this type of gasket?

    Thank you

    regards

    • Good,
When using fertilizer spreaders, it is not possible to calculate the amount of fertilizer left in them.
Furthermore, it is advisable to leave the cover of the fertilizer spreader completely loose when starting it, since the pressure alone will close it, leaving it completely sealed and preventing the liquid from escaping.
Regarding the replacement of the gasket, it is important to keep in mind that each brand of fertilizer spreader may require a different gasket.

      Sincerely, the Mundoriego team.
