The irrigation filters They constitute a fundamental piece in an irrigation system, mainly in drip irrigation. Its function is to separate the particles contained in the water to avoid blockage in pipes and water emitters or drippers caused by sediments or suspended particles.

Filters must have regular maintenance depending on the type of water, its origin, the particles it carries and those it drags on its way to the filter. For this reason, it is essential to use a filtration system in any irrigation installation, even more so if the water comes out through a dripper. Failure to do so could
generate obstructions in the circulation and the exit of the water, causing wear or breakage of
material, and its consequent economic loss in its installation.

 

Types of irrigation filters


Within the irrigation filters, we can differentiate them based on their periodic maintenance: automatic filters y manual filters.

The difference between the two filters is the cleaning method they require. The first case is usually used for large agricultural installations, since its cleaning can be programmed automatically, without the need to go to the installation. In the case of manual filters, these must be cleaned by us periodically depending on the dirt that the filter can generate with respect to the quality of the water that circulates through the pipe. The latter are usually filters for small flows, where, due to their economy, their use is more profitable than automatic ones.

Due to its filtering system, two materials are mainly used in agriculture: ring filters and mesh filters. What does each of them consist of? We tell you!

The first of them, filter with rings, is a system formed by a cylinder composed of a set of rings inside. Its operation would be similar to that of a funnel. The particles would be retained by this system of rings, preventing their passage through the pipes. This system is quite effective and economical considering its performance.

The second one is the mesh filter. As its name suggests, the system is made up of a casing inside which contains a plastic or metal mesh that works as a strainer. These filtering systems must have periodic manual maintenance to eliminate all those particles or sediments retained inside the mechanism. Both ring filters and mesh filters can be used in automatic and manual filters. Both systems retain particles depending on a degree of filtration. The filtration capacity of each of these systems is called micron rating. The higher the micron rating, the greater the ability to retain particles. On the contrary, the lower the capacity to retain particles, the lower the micron rating. The standard micron rating in agriculture is 120 mesh (equivalent to 130 microns), but depending on water quality, higher or lower micron ratings may be used.
