Irrigation pumps: what they are and what they are for

Una irrigation pump It is a tool that serves, fundamentally, to provide the necessary amount of water in the crop irrigation. In addition, it has countless applications such as:

  • Drainage of water.
  • Transport of water from one place to another, regardless of whether they are at different levels.
  • Emptying or filling of water tanks, ponds, swimming pools, etc.
  • Increase in water speed and / or pressure.

The irrigation pump will help us to accurately control the presión to which we want the water and we can have almost total control.

The energy source used by irrigation pumps to supply power to the water flow can be of two types: through fuel or by electrical power.

✅ In the first case we will be talking about motor pumps. They are those that use fuel, gasoline or diesel, because they are made up of a combustion engine. The autonomy of a motor pump will depend on the amount of fuel.

✅ On the other hand there are electric pumps. These work by electricity, since they are connected to an outlet. These types of pumps are usually used for smaller areas than in the previous case, such as domestic use.

How to choose the right irrigation pump?

Choosing the most suitable irrigation pump will depend on several factors such as flow rate and pressure. We must also take into account the compatibility of the pump with the irrigation system.

Each irrigation installation has different needs and, therefore, the type of pump will also be different in each case.

There are two variables that directly influence when designing a irrigation system: flow y presión. What is flow and pressure?

El flow It is the amount of water that travels through the irrigation system in a given time. Pressure is the force with which the water is transported through the irrigation system.

This makes it possible for the water to reach its destination successfully through the pipes, even when there are slopes. For this, a minimum pressure must exist, which will depend on the type of emitter in the installation.

Each agricultural area and irrigation system will need an adequate amount of water, flow and pressure. It is necessary to use an irrigation pump when we need to increase the water pressure.

To choose the right irrigation pump, it is also necessary to take into account some essential factors: low energy consumption, adequate pressure and avoiding any leakage or engine failure.

First of all, we must make sure that the pump is compatible with the irrigation system. The energy consumption will depend on the kW required by the motor for its operation.

One way to reduce leaks, breakdowns, or energy consumption is by trying to keep the pressure in the irrigation system low. But we will need a sufficient minimum pressure for the correct operation of the installation.

All the elements must be correctly integrated for an efficient operation of the irrigation system. Maintaining the water pressure and flow will help us reduce costs. Therefore, all these factors will directly affect obtaining a good harvest, and will improve profitability.

Types of irrigation pumps

1️⃣ Submersible clean water pumps: These types of pumps are designed for the extraction of groundwater both in wells or in water reservoirs. They are designed to drive water from very deep or shallow levels. They lack a suction installation, since they are always submerged in water and collect the water from around them.

2️⃣ Clean / wastewater drainage pumps: Drainage or bilge pumps are pumps designed to evacuate water from ground level, ditches, underground manholes or buried tanks to a point that is at a slightly higher elevation. These pumps are not designed for very high elevation differences, but they are designed to displace large volumes of water even if they have suspended particles or are loaded water.

3️⃣ Horizontal surface: This type of pump is specially designed to cover a wide variety of applications in the domestic field, such as irrigation and refrigeration, or heating of water for supply in facilities.

4️⃣ Vertical surface: Vertical pumps cover the same applications as horizontal pumps but with a higher pressure range.

5️⃣ Pressure groups: Intended for the needs of maintaining a pressurized water system, as well as supplying a certain flow at the moment it is requested instantly through a shut-off valve.

6️⃣ Circulating pumps: The use of these pumps is to keep in motion a water circuit in which we need a certain flow, speed and pressure. Its main use is that of air conditioning systems.

7️⃣ Fire fighting groups: As its name indicates, these equipments are exclusively intended for firefighting installations, complying with the strictest legal requirements.

8️⃣ Pool pumps: Suitable for filtering swimming pool waters. Its characteristics are very specific to move a large amount of water at pressures that do not exceed 20m.ca

9️⃣ Dosing pumps: Pumps designed to add a certain chemical compound to the water. For this, these pumps usually have a low water volume capacity, highly adjustable to the needs of very precise volumes.

  1. Hello, good day, I need a submersible water pump to carry water to a height of 200 meters, which one do you recommend and what is the cost...

    • For particular requests, contact us by email, phone or whatsapp that you can find in the CONTACT section of our website.

  2. Hello, can I use a pool pump for irrigation? In other words, the pump will not have much flow because the diameter will decrease from 50 mm to 16 mm with drip outlets, that is, small holes. Only to take advantage of the pool water during winter. Thank you

    • Good,
Yes, you can use the pump without problem but do not connect all the flow of the pump. We advise you to make a bypass for the ø16 pipe from the discharge pipe to the pool and, while the water is recirculating in the pool, irrigate at the same time. You should not use the full flow of the pump as this would be too much and the pump would overheat due to working outside the curve.

We hope we have helped you. Sincerely,
      The Mundoriego team.
