In this article we are going to talk about the two most used manual filters for irrigation systems. The difference between them is the filter surface: mesh filters and ring filters. Let's see how they work and their advantages.

What are ring filters and mesh filters? What are they for?

We must start from the basis that any localized irrigation installation must have at least one mesh filter or rings to retain mineral particles or harmful products that the water may carry before reaching our installation, coming from rivers, reservoirs, wells...etc.

The mesh filters have the function of carrying out a superficial sifting of the water, retaining the particles that are larger than the mesh holes. They are usually used in water that is not too dirty or as safety elements after hydrocyclones, fertigation equipment or sand filters, which are increasingly less used due to their costly maintenance.

Mesh filters are especially suitable for retaining particles of mineral origin since all the organic ones that have a more fibrous structure easily filter through the holes in them.

Ring filters have the same use as mesh filters, although their operating principles are different. In this type of filter, the filter element is a cartridge with slotted rings that are pressed together, allowing the water to pass through, but retaining particles larger than the size of the slots.

Should I use ring filters or mesh filters more?

Mesh and rings are the main filter elements used for filtering water and, of course, they are the most economical measure, because the cost of solving a blockage that has already occurred in terms of time and money is higher.

In each filter element (mesh or rings) there is a degree of filtration, called micronage, measured in microns or mesh, for a greater or lesser retention of particle passage. The higher the micron rating, the lower the filtering capacity. The usual one in agriculture is 130 microns (120 mesh), which is the standard size of the sieve.

Deciding whether it is better to use ring filters or mesh filters has a lot to do with the advantages that each system offers and our particular objectives.

Advantages of mesh filters

- It is very effective with particles of mineral origin.

- They are cheaper than the rings, especially in large flows.

Advantages of ring filters

- It is good with both mineral and organic particles.

- The rings are quite resistant so it is not very common to have to change them.

- Manual cleaning is quite simple.
